NFL Junior Player Development (JPD)
The Junior Player Development (JPD) program helps teenagers transition from being a youth football player to the increased pressures both on and off the field of being in high school. It was developed to provide a template for high school football programs, as well as additional access to youth tackle football, the program provides step-by-step instruction for every team position to boys between the ages of 12 and 14 in a fun and engaging environment.
To find a JPD program site in your area, please click here.
The program integrates on-field skills development with life skills and character development. As they plan for future high school interscholastic activities, participants receive instruction from NFL-selected high school coaches, as well as counseling that focuses around a weekly life skill.
Each life skill theme is addressed through the context of football with instructors making connections between life skills as they are applied on the field, in school, at home and in the community.
In addition, through a youth coach's development program that provides more than 60 hours of practical training, coaches learn how to properly teach all game fundamentals and how to creatively and effectively apply life skill messages.
For more information on the JPD program, please click here.
The Miami Dolphins hosted four JPD sites for the summer of 2007. During the week of June 16th – 21st, Nova High and Cypress Bay High participated in the program followed by Boyd Anderson High and Pompano High for the week of June 23rd-28th. A Miami Dolphins Alumnus went to the sites to speak to the players regarding how they went from a youth football player to be able to play in the NFL.

NFL Flag Football
NFL Flag Football is the best way for players ages 5-17 to play and learn the game of football. Players will actively engage in the fundamentals, rules, techniques and skills of football while learning like skills off the field of play. Each league is run in a safe and fun environment. Leagues run year-round and are played throughout South Florida. Interested in finding an already existing league? Click here to find a league in your area. Flag football is similar to tackle football with a few differences. The first, and most obvious, difference is the lack of pads. Instead of tackling your opponent, pulling the flag of the ball carrier will indicate when the ball carrier is “down by contact.” Second, instead of 11-on-11 games, NFL Flag consists of five-on-five competitions. Although this is a difference, it actually enhances the game of flag football. Unlike tackle football, every player is eligible to receive a pass. That means offensive lineman can run routes and advance the ball just like a running back or receiver. Passing is emphasized in the flag atmosphere leading to many wild and trick plays not possible in the regular 11-on-11 contact game. For a complete list of rules for NFL Flag, please click here.

NFL Punt, Pass and Kick (PPK)
The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition is a great way for both novices and experienced players to participate in a free, non-contact national youth football competition. Last year, the Dolphins hosted over 200 participants in a regional competition at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility in Davie. Further, a sectional qualifying bracket had over 40 qualifiers trying to earn their way to the PPK finals. The South Florida regional finals were held at Dolphin Stadium with over 20 different participants before the Miami Dolphins took on the Kansas City Chiefs.
Punt, Pass and Kick is a youth competition started by the NFL in 1961. (That’s longer than the Dolphins have been in existence!) Scores are based on the competitors’ ability to punt, pass and kick a football for both distance and accuracy. A score is given by measuring the distance of a PPK attempt, and subtracting the distance the ball is away from the center line. For example, participant 1 punts the ball 30 yards long, but is 12 yards away from the center line. His score would be 18. Participant 2 punts the ball 25 yards and is 5 yards away from the center line, receiving a score of 20. For more information about rules and regulations, click here.
Both Boys and Girls ages 8-15 are eligible to participate. To see how to sign up for a PPK competition in your area, please click here.

NFL Youth Football Fund
The NFL Youth Football Fund (YFF) is a 501 (c) (3) established in a joint effort of the NFL and NFLPA in 1998. Its goal is to promote positive youth development through different ways of giving back to the community. The NFLYFF recognizes that youth and high school football are the foundation of our game. It addresses many aspects of youth football—from participation to coaching to improving the playing fields.
The NFLYFF has many different grants to help spread the game of football. Some of these include a player matching youth/high school football grant, NFL Player Youth Football Camp Grant, NFL Coach Youth Football Camp Grant and Local Agency Grants. The NFL YFF website is currently undergoing renovation. Please check back later for updates.
The Miami Dolphins have paired up with the NFL YFF in past endeavors to help restore some of South Florida’s football stadiums.
Traz Powell Stadium — Some believe Traz Powell is the soul of high school football for South Florida. Holding high school and youth football games for many years, the Miami Dolphins and NFL Youth Football Fund provided for the installation of synthetic Field Turf, renovation of the snack bar and concession area, renovation of the track surrounding the field and the bathrooms.
Curtis Park — To mark the occasion of the opening of the new renovated Curtis Park in Overtown Miami, the Miami Dolphins held a press conference welcoming Mayor Manny Diaz, Miami Dolphins President Bryan Weidmeier and the head of the NFL Youth Football Department, Cedric Jones. Curtis Park was also given a face lift, with new synthetic Field Turf, concession area and bathrooms. A high school clinic ran by current and former Dolphins players also took part of the festivities.

NFL International
The NFL brings the sport of football beyond its traditional American borders. Different youth leagues have spawned in Europe, Japan, Mexico, Canada and China. To find out more about how to start a league in a foreign country, please click here.
The Miami Dolphins have continued to grow American Football into an international game. This upcoming year, the Dolphins will host the New York Giants in the first regular season game outside of North America. The game will take place at Wembley Stadium in London.
In addition to the London trip, the Dolphins had a unique chance to host foreign teams for the Global Junior Championships (GJC). This tournament pits high school all-star teams from around the globe against one another in the two weeks preceding the Super Bowl. This year, team Canada defeated Team USA in the Gold Medal game to take the title as world champions.
Team France had a private tour of the team practice facility in Davie. Players met with Center Rex Hadnot, who, through an interpreter, gave Team France some advice about continuing on in their football careers.
