GENERAL INFORMATION

Looking to build on the greatest turnaround in NFL history, the reigning AFC East Champion Miami Dolphins plan to continue the successes of the 2008 season as they prepare for the 74th annual NFL Selection Meeting.

As with the 2008 Draft, the first two rounds of the 2009 Draft will take place on the first day with the final five being held on Sunday. There will be only 10 minutes between picks in the first round, seven minutes between selections in the second round and five minutes in each round afterwards. In addition, starting times have changed from previous years, with the draft commencing at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.

Live coverage of the entire draft will be provided by both the NFL Network and ESPN.

The first two rounds are expected to conclude at approximately 9:00 p.m. (ET). In 2007, the second and third rounds of the draft – in which there were 10 minutes and five minutes between picks, respectively - lasted a total of just less than five hours. In 2007, the rounds in which there were five minutes between selections (3-7), lasted an average of one hour and 45 minutes per round.

Trading is allowed during the course of the draft. The Commissioner reserves the right to proceed with the selection process, however, if a club fails to complete a trade within their allotted time period in that round.

There will be a total of seven rounds and 256 selections (224 regular picks and 32 compensatory choices). The NFL awarded 32 draft picks to 16 teams based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost in 2008. Broken down by rounds, those 32 picks consist of four in the third round, four in the fourth round, five in the fifth round, four in the sixth round and 15 in the seventh round. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team that loses more compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft choices with a maximum of four. This year two additional choices were awarded at the end of the seventh round to bring the total number of compensatory selections to 32, equaling the number of NFL clubs. The Dolphins were not awarded any compensatory picks.

In all, the Dolphins currently hold nine picks in this year’s draft. They hold their own selection in rounds one (25th overall), two (56th overall), three (87th overall) and five (161st overall). They also own a second-round pick from Washington as part of the Jason Taylor trade (57th overall), a seventh-round pick from Cleveland as part of the Travis Daniels trade (214th overall) as well as an additional seventh-round selection from Carolina as part of the Josh McCown trade. The Dolphins swapped fourth-round picks with Oakland as part of the Samson Satele trade (3/23/09), and now hold the 8th pick in the sixth round (181th overall). Their seventh-round pick (232nd overall) went to Jacksonville in exchange for DT Tony McDaniel.

DOLPHINS' DRAFT SUCCESS

The Dolphins have experienced a great deal of success with their draft picks. In 2008, left tackle Jake Long (pictured, right), the NFL's first overall pick, was selected to the Pro Bowl. With Long's selection, it marked the first time that the top pick in the NFL Draft was chosen to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season since New Orleans running back George Rogers in 1981. In fact, since the merger of 1970, Long was just the fourth No. 1 overall selection in the draftto make the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, along with Houston Oilers running back Earl Campbell (1978), Detroit running back Billy Sims (1980) and Rogers.

Long started all 16 games at left tackle for the Dolphins this year, as he became just the fifth offensive lineman and fourth tackle in the Dolphins’ 43-year history to start every regular season game, joining LT Richmond Webb (1990), RT Todd Wade (2000), LT Wade Smith (2003) and C Samson Satele (2007). He was part of a line that ranked sixth in the AFC and 10th in the NFL by allowing only 25 sacks. The Dolphins also averaged 4.2 yards per rushattempt and scored 18 touchdowns on the ground behind the line.

Since 1983, nine different Dolphins have earned NFL Rookie of the Year accolades - the most of any NFL team over this 25-year stretch. The most recent Dolphin honoree was wide receiver Chris Chambers, who was an NFL OffensiveRookie of the Year pick by both Football News and Football Digest, and was a consensus all-rookie selection in 2001. Chambers, a second-round pick out of Wisconsin (52nd overall), set club single-season rookie records for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

In 2007, wide receiver/returner Ted Ginn, Jr. set a club single-season rookie record for combined yardage with 2,086 and was the punt return specialist on the Pro Football Weekly/PFWA all-rookie team. Center Samson Satele, a second-round pick, became the first rookie in team history to start every game at center and like Ginn was a member of the PFW/PFWA all-rookie squad.

In 2005, running back Ronnie Brown, the team's first-round draft choice was a consensus all-rookie selection.

Linebacker A.J. Duhe started this tradition in 1977, when he was cited as Rookie of the Year by numerous media outlets. In 1983, quarterback Dan Marino earned the distinction, followed by linebacker John Offerdahl (1986), running back Troy Stradford (1987), offensive tackle Richmond Webb (1990), defensive end Marco Coleman (1992) and defensive tackle Tim Bowens (1994). Linebacker Zach Thomas, the third of three fifth-round choices by Miami (154thoverall), was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by Football Digest in 1996. In 1997, linebacker Derrick Rodgers was Sports Illustrated’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 2000, tackle Todd Wade, a second-round choice that year, was a consensus all-rookie selection.

Over the last 13 years (1996-08), 75 of the Dolphins' 111 draft choices have played in at least one regular season game with the club, equating to percentage of 67.6.

CURRENT DOLPHINS WHO WERE DRAFTED

Of the 65 players currently on the Dolphins' roster, 19 are former draft choices of the team. By round, that breaks down to five in the first round, four in the second round, two in the third round, two in the fourth round, three in the sixth round and three in the seventh round. By draft year it consists of one from 2003, one from 2004, four from 2005, three from 2006 and 10 from 2007.

A total of 46 of the 65 players on the Dolphins' roster were selected in the NFL Draft, either by Miami or another NFL team.

The Dolphins' roster consists of seven former NFL first-round draft choices – RB Ricky Williams (New Orleans, 1999), CB Will Allen (Giants, 2001), T Vernon Carey (Miami, 2004), RB Ronnie Brown (Miami, 2005 - pictured, right), CB Jason Allen (Miami, 2006), WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Miami, 2007) and T Jake Long (Miami, 2008).

DOLPHINS ALL-TIME DRAFT BY POSITION

In 43 college drafts (1966-08), the Dolphins have selected a total of 539 players. Of this total, 96 have been offensive linemen, the most of any position. The rest of the Dolphins' all-time draft by position includes defensive line (92 players selected), linebacker (78), defensive back (77), running back (73), wide receiver (52), tight end (34), quarterback (26), kicker (6) and punter (5).

Of the Dolphins’ 39 first-round choices in team history, eight have come from both the offensive line the defensive line, the most of any position. The rest of the Dolphins' all-time first-round draft choices by position running back (7), defensive back (5), linebacker (4), wide receiver (4 - including Ted Ginn, Jr. pictured, right) and quarterback (3).

A LOOK AT THE 25TH OVERALL PICK

The last time the Dolphins held the 25th selection of the first round was in 2002, however that selection was used by the New Orleans Saints as a part of the trade that sent RB Ricky Williams to Miami. This year marks the seventh time that the Dolphins have had the 25th selection in the first round of the draft. The last player that was selected with the 25th pick was in 1995 when T Billy Milner from the University of Houston was chosen. Milner went on to play only one full season with the Dolphins before being traded to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for TE Troy Drayton on October 1, 1996. The Dolphins had the 25th pick in both 1989 when they selected S Louis Oliver and then again in 1993 when they selected Penn State WR O.J. McDuffie.

If the Dolphins hold on to the 25th selection in this year’s draft they will tie the Minnesota Vikings as the team with the most selections at that position.

Since 1970, teams who have selected at 25 have chosen 22 defensive players compared to 17 offensive players. The position most frequently selected at 25 is defensive line (9) followed by defensive back/cornerback (7), offensive linemen (5) and wide receiver (5), linebacker (4) and running back (4) safety (2) and quarterback (2) and tight end (1).
