99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #29

Posted Aug 9, 2014

This jersey has been worn by some good players, and a great one.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This jersey has been worn by some good players, and a great one. For the most part it was worn by defensive backs, although the first to wear it, Jack Harper (1967-68) was a running back who was a part-time starter in 1967 along with Joe Auer before they were both replaced there the following year by Jim Kiick. The first player to wear the jersey for more than a season after that was Liffort Hobley (1987-93), who started occasionally for the team at safety but saw most of his playing time in a reserve role. The player who wound up making the number special was cornerback Sam Madison (1997-05). One of the best defensive backs ever to play for the Dolphins, his 31 interceptions ranks third on the team’s all-time INT list. He was selected to four straight Pro Bowl teams (1999-02), and only Jake Scott was named to more Pro Bowl teams among defensive backs in Dolphin history. Madison teamed with fellow Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain for much of his career, arguably giving the Dolphins the best CB tandem in the club’s history.  Madison remains close to the Dolphins, serving as one of the “FINSIDERS” on the team’s daily TV and radio show. Andre Goodman (2006) started 13 games at cornerback the one season  -  2006  - he wore that number, and Tyrone Culver (2008-11) was a valuable defensive back reserve for the team after that.  But it’s Madison who far and away established the jersey’s legacy.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #29 includes Jack Harper (1967-68); Garry Grady (1969); Tom Smith (1973); John Swain (1985); Liffort Hobley (1987-93); Frankie Smith (1994-95); Sam Madison (1997-05); André Goodman (2006); Travis Daniels (2007); Tyrone Culver (2008-11); Jonathan Amaya (2012); and Will Davis (2013).

Tomorrow:  What player who wore #28 once led Miami in rushing. He was one of the best running backs in league history before joining the Dolphins, and was acquired in part by trading away Miami’s starting quarterback from the previous year. Can you name that player?
