99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #38

Posted Jul 31, 2014

This was a number that was worn by some good role players, but very few starters.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This was a number that was worn by some good role players, but very few starters. It wasn’t worn by anyone until 1977, when fullback Leroy Harris (1977-78) became the first Dolphin to wear it. He started 16 games his two years in Miami and rushed for a total of 929 those two seasons, but was better known as being the backfield blocker for Delvin Williams in 1978, who set a team rushing record with 1,258 yards, a mark that wasn’t broke until 2002 by Ricky Williams. Another fullback, Terry Robiskie (1980-81) wore that jersey when he started five games in 1980. He would later return to the Dolphins as wide receivers coach in 2007. The only pure starter to wear the number was defensive back Calvin Jackson (1994-99). A local product from Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Jackson started most of his last five years with the team, first at cornerback and then at safety when Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain joined the club.  The jersey was also worn by Patrick Cobbs (2006-10), a good runner who never saw as much action as his talents should have allowed, playing behind Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #38 includes Harris (1977-78); Bob Torrey (1979); Robiskie (1980-81); *Clarence Bailey (1987); Bruce Plummer (1988); Willard Reaves (1989); Jackson (1994-99); Kevin Williams (2000); Qunitin Williams (2004); Cobbs (2006-10); Richard Medlin (2011); and Julian Posey (2012).

Tomorrow: What player who wore # 37 is one of only three Dolphins (along with Larry Csonka and Ricky Williams) to finish among the NFL’s top three rushing leaders?
