99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #68

Posted Jul 1, 2014

Starting with Eric Laakso, this jersey number is highlighted by three good offensive line starters, all of whom had their Dolphins career prematurely come to an end.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Starting with Eric Laakso (1978-84), this jersey number is highlighted by three good offensive line starters, all of whom had their Dolphins career prematurely come to an end. A fourth round draft choice of the Dolphins, it took Laakso a few seasons to break into the starting lineup on an offensive line that had four Pro Bowlers on it (Bob Kuechenberg, Ed Newman, Jim Langer, and Larry Little). But in 1980 he started all 16 games at right tackle and remained there until he suffered a knee injury four games into the 1984 season that ultimately ended his career. His tenure as a starter included the Dolphins appearance in Super Bowl XVII following the 1982 season, as well as Dan Marino’s rookie campaign the next year. Seth McKinney (2002-06) took ownership of the number a decade later and played well as the team’s starting center when he took over for Tim Ruddy in 2004 until a neck injury sidelined him for the entire 2006 campaign, and he was released shortly after that. The final Dolphins starter to wear #68 was another offensive lineman, Richie Incognito (2010-13), who will unfortunately be remembered more for his non-football exploits than his on-field play. During his time with the team, Incognito played well at guard, including making the Pro Bowl at that position in 2012, until his career with the Dolphins came to an abrupt end last season because of off-field issues.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #68 includes Melvin Mitchell (1976); Laakso (1978-84); Greg Koch (1986-87); *Louis Oubre (1987); Jim Huddleston (1987); Andrew Greene (1995); Mike Sheldon (1997-99); McKinney (2002-06); Ikechuku Ndukwe (2008) and Incognito (2010-13).

Tomorrow:   What player who wore #67 matched up against a Hall of Famer in a Super Bowl and dominated him to such an extent that his opponent got so frustrated he wound up getting ejected from the game?
