99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #74

Posted Jun 25, 2014

This jersey was worn by a number of unheralded players who performed well for the Dolphins but for the most part never got the recognition they deserved.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This jersey was worn by a number of unheralded players who performed well for the Dolphins but for the most part never got the recognition they deserved. It started with defensive tackle John Richardson (1967-71), who started 44 games in his Dolphins career, including all 14 games of the 1969 and 1970 seasons. As a measure of just how good that ’70 defense was, of the ten other players who started alongside of Richardson that year, all but two also were starters on the undefeated team’s “No-Name” defense two years later. Richardson didn’t make it that far, but he was a member of the Dolphins first Super Bowl team in 1971 where he started five times in his final season with the squad. Following him a few years later was defensive tackle Randy Crowder (1974-76), part of the only father-son combination to get drafted by Miami (his son is former Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder) and one of only three father-son duos to ever play for the team. Crowder started 25 games in 1975-76, and played well during that time, recording 7.5 sacks in 1975 and starting all 14 games in 1976, before his Dolphin career ended prematurely after that season because of substance abuse issues.  After that, the number was mainly worn by versatile offensive linemen who played well when called upon, including tackle Cleveland Green (1980-86), tackle Mark Dennis (1987-93), guard/tackle Brent Smith (1997-02), tackle Wade Smith (2003-06), and guard John Jerry (2010-13).

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #74 includes Richardson (1967-71); Crowder (1974-76); Steve Young (1977); Green (1980-86); Dennis (1987); *Jeff Wiska (1987); Dennis (1987-93); Ed Hawthorne (1995); Brent Smith (1997-02); Wade Smith (2003-06); Quentin Moses (2007-08) and Jerry (2010-13)

Tomorrow: Only eight players in Dolphin history wore # 73, but two of them were Pro Bowlers. Who were they?
