99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #79

Posted Jun 20, 2014

The one long-time starter who wore #79 was Jon Giesler, who was known for his toughness and determination.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This number is dotted with role players and backups, with few exceptions. The one long-time starter who wore #79 was Jon Giesler (1979-87), who was known for his toughness and determination. He was part of two Dolphin Super Bowl teams (1982, 1984) started every game for four seasons. Playing the left tackle position, he protected Dan Marino’s blind side during Marino’s first five years with the Dolphins, including every game of Marino’s record breaking 1984 campaign. Giesler was such a good pass blocker that Marino was sacked only 15 times over the course of a two-year span (1987-88). Another starter who wore this jersey was Kenny Mixon (1998-01) who played defensive end opposite Jason Taylor. It was a good partnership  –  while Taylor was one of the greatest pass rushers in NFL history, Mixon, along with tackles Tim Bowens and Daryl Gardiner, played the more unheralded role of run stuffers, freeing up JT and Zach Thomas to do their thing.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #79 includes Al Dotson (1966); Claude Brownlee (1967); Mike Current (1967); Jim Urbanek (1968); Wayne Moore (1970-78); Giesler (1979-87); *Ike Readon (1987); Giesler (1987-88); Donnie Gardner (1991); Larry Webster (1992-94); Billy Milner (1995-96); Mixon (1998-01); Ronald Flemons (2004); Anthony Alabi (2005-07); Pat McQuistan (2010) and Derrick Shelby (2012-current).

Tomorrow: Among the Dolphins who wore #78, one name, a member of the team’s Honor Roll, stands out. But can you name the current NFL head coach who also wore that number as a member of the Dolphins?
