99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #87

Posted Jun 12, 2014

A total of 18 players wore the #87, but 11 of those players wore it for just one year.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Outside of tight end Dan Johnson (1983-87), who was a productive role player during his career in Miami, it’s hard to single out any other player wearing # 87 who stood out among his peers. In fact, in addition to Johnson, only one other player, Mike Williams (1991-95), wore it for more than three seasons, while 11 players wore it for just one year.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #87 includes John Roderick (1966-67); Jim Mertens (1969); Willie Richardson (1970); Andre Tillman (1974-78); Johnson (1983-87); *Rich Siler (1987); *David Lewis (1987); James Pruitt (1990); Charles Henry (1991); Williams (1991-95); Kirby Dar Dar (1996); Yatil Green (1997-99); Bert Emanuel (2000); Dedric Ward (2001-02); Lorenzo Diamond (2005); Justin Peelle (2006-07); Anthony Armstrong (2012) and Ryan Spadola (2013).

Tomorrow: Two of the most versatile receivers in Dolphins history, who also were threats to throw the ball, both wore #86. Who were they?
