99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #88

Posted Jun 11, 2014

This number received its greatest exposure when it was worn by tight ends.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This number received its greatest exposure when it was worn by tight ends  -  first Jim Mandich (1970-77), followed by Brian Kinchen (1988-90) and then Keith Jackson (1992-94). Mandich, who was Don Shula’s first-ever draft choice when Shula joined the Dolphins in 1970, eventually was inducted into the Dolphin Honor Roll. And Jackson set team tight end reception records when he played, some of which still stand. Among the wideouts who wore this number, without question the most recognizable of them was someone who built his Pro Football Hall of Fame career playing somewhere else  -  Cris Carter. After setting countless NFL records during 15 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, Carter came out of retirement in 2002 to join the Dolphins. He played in five games with Miami that season (including one start), recording eight catches for 66 yards and one touchdown while missing four games with a kidney injury before retiring again for good.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #88 includes LaVerne Torczon (1966); Mandich (1970-77); Elmer Bailey (1980-81); Vince Heflin (1982-85); Kinchen (1988-90); Joel Williams (1987); Arthur Cox (1991); Walter Stanley (1991); Jackson (1992-94); Joe Planansky (1995); Charles Jordan (1996-98); Nate Jacquet (1998-99); Jeff Ogden (2000-01); Carter (2002); Derrius Thompson (2003-04); Cliff Russell (2005-06); David Martin (2007-08) and Jeron Mastrud (2010-12).
