99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #89

Posted Jun 10, 2014

This number was worn by two pretty good receivers in Dolphins history.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

This number was worn by two pretty good receivers in Dolphins history, starting with Karl Noonan in 1966, the team’s inaugural season. The most productive wideout to wear it was Nat Moore, who was the Dolphins’ all-time leader in receptions, reception yardage, and touchdown catches when he retired, and he still ranks among the current top three leaders in all of those categories. Moore was inducted into both the Dolphins’ Honor Roll and the Walk of Fame following his career, and in recognition of his long-time service to the South Florida community the Dolphins’ annual community service award was named in his honor.  Tony Martin also wore this jersey during his first tour of duty with the Dolphins (1990-93). With his speed he was considered to be a possible game-breaking wideout, but he was overshadowed by Mark Duper, Mark Clayton and Irving Fryar during that time. It wasn’t until he returned to Miami six years later and donned a different number that he finally had the type of season as a Dolphin that everyone expected of him earlier.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #89 includes Noonan (1966-71); Moore (1974-86); *Leland Douglas (1987); David Lewis (1987); Martin (1990-93); Randal Hill (1995-96); Ed Perry (1997-04); Alex Holmes (2005); Tim Massaquoi (2006); Sean Ryan (2008) and Will Yeatman (2011).

Tomorrow:    Don Shula’s first ever draft choice when he joined the Dolphin wore # 88. Who was he? Bonus question: Who was the Pro Football Hall of Famer who also wore this number?
