99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #91

Posted Jun 8, 2014

The journey of this jersey started slowly, beginning in the 1980s when three journeymen defensive ends were the first Dolphins to wear it.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

The journey of this jersey started slowly, beginning in the 1980s when Ed Judie, Mack Moore, and Fred Robinson were the first Dolphins to wear it. Fortunes improved in 1988, when Jeff Cross joined the team and was given the number. During his eight year career in Miami, Cross made the Pro Bowl and notched 59.5 sacks, the fifth highest total in team history. After Lorenzo Bromell, Jay Williams, and Vonnie Holliday followed Cross in that jersey, things really took off when Cam Wake started to wear the number. He developed into one of the NFL’s best pass rushers and if he continues his outstanding play this season he can pass Cross on the Dolphins’ all-time sack list before the end of the year.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #91 includes Judie (1984); Moore (1985-86); Robinson (1986); Victor Morris (1987); Cross (1988-95); Bromell (1998-01); Williams (2002-04); Holliday (2005-08) and Wake (2009-Current).

Tomorrow:  Only two Dolphin players wore #90 for more than three years. Marco Coleman was one of them  –  can you name the other?
