99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #92

Posted Jun 7, 2014

While current long snapper John Denney now wears that number, for the most part the jersey has been worn by players on the defensive side of the ball.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

While current long snapper John Denney now wears that number (after sporting #97 in 2005-06, his first two years in the league), for the most part the jersey has been worn by players on the defensive side of the ball. Unheralded defenders like David Griggs (1989-93) and Jeff Zgonina (2003) wore  that number. Probably the player who made the biggest impact on the team while wearing that jersey was defensive tackle Daryl Gardener (1996-01), who was Jimmy Johnson’s first-ever draft pick as head coach of the Dolphins. Jimmy wound up picking Zach Thomas four rounds and 134 players later in that 1966 draft.

The complete list of Dolphins who have worn #92 includes Laz Chavez (1987); Nate Hill (1988); Griggs (1989-93); Gardener (1996-01); Zgonina (2003) and Denney (2007-Current).

Tomorrow:  Most Dolphin fans know that Cam Wake currently wears # 91. Can you name the player ahead of him on the Dolphins’ all-time sack list who also wore that number?
