99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #96

Posted Jun 3, 2014

Like #97, #96 wasn’t worn for quite a while, making its Dolphin debut in 1985 when a linebacker wore it for the first time in team history.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Like #97, #96 wasn’t worn for quite a while, making its Dolphin debut in 1985 when Sanders Shiver wore it for the first time in team history. For the most part, the number was worn by players on the defensive line, including Alfred Ogelsby, Norman Hand, Daniel Stubbs, David Bowens and Paul Soliai. While Soliai made a Pro Bowl during his Dolphins career and Stubbs notched nine sacks his first year with the team in 1996, probably the most recognizable player to wear #96 was someone who only spent one season in Miami - Mike Golic. Sports fans know him best for his current role as a host of a popular ESPN talk show, but he also spent one season (1993) as a member of the Dolphins, when he wore # 96.

The complete list of Dolphins players who wore #96 includes Shiver (1985); David Marshall (1987); Oglesby (1990-92); Golic (1993); Hand (1995); Stubbs (1996-98); Rich Owens (1999-00); Bowens (2001-06) and Soliai (2007-13)
