99 Days Of 99 Jersey Numbers: #98

Posted Jun 1, 2014

Dolphins fans may be gratified to learn that probably the best player to ever wear this number in team history is still on the roster - Jared Odrick.

As we tick the days off to the season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 7, each day we highlight the players who wore that particular jersey number during their tenure in Miami. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

98: Dolphins fans may be gratified to learn that probably the best player to ever wear this number in team history is still on the roster - Jared Odrick. He had a solid season last year, finishing third on the Dolphins with 4.5 sacks. That was a continuation of his consistent play the previous two seasons, when he registered 5.0 sacks in 2012 and 6.0 sacks in 2011, his first full year with the team after missing all but one game of the 2010 campaign with a leg injury.

Another player to wear #98 for Miami was Matt Roth (2005-09), a versatile defensive end/linebacker. He was strong against the run, but also recorded a total of 12.5 sacks during his tenure with the Dolphins, including 5.0 in 2008. A trio of defensive tackles who played well during their brief time in Miami – Jackie Cline (1987-89), Shawn Lee (1990-91) and Norman Hand (1996) - also sported # 98.

The complete list of players who wore #98 includes Cline (1987-89); Lee (1990-91); Hand (1996); Antoine Simpson (1999); Damian Gregory (2001); Henry Taylor (2001); Bryan Robinson (2004); Roth (2005-09) and Odrick (2010-current).

Tomorrow: What player who wore # 97 was perhaps subject to more undeserved criticism than anyone else in Dolphin history?
