Long-time equipment manager wins NFL award.

Miami, FL – Miami Dolphins Equipment Manager Joe Cimino was named winner of the Whitey Zimmerman award as the NFL Equipment Manager of the Year. He is the first member of the Dolphins to win that award, which is voted on by the 32 equipment managers in the league. The award was started in 1994 and named after the former longtime equipment manager of the Atlanta Falcons.

“We are excited to hear about this great honor for Joe and his staff,“ Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland said. “They work tirelessly to provide first-class support to our players, coaches and staff and we are happy that they have been honored with such a prestigious award for their efforts.”

Cimino is entering his 20th season as a member of the Dolphins equipment staff and seventh in his current role after being promoted to Equipment Manager during the 2007 offseason. He first worked in the department in 1987 prior to his return in 1995. Cimino is also a certified member of the Athletic Equipment Managers Association and sits on the NFL Equipment Manager committee dedicated towards health and safety issues for players.

“This certainly is not an individual award,” Cimino said. “It would not have been possible without the outstanding support of our equipment staff, including Charlie Thiele, John Swede and Austin Pope. In addition, the overall support of the entire Dolphins organization has been invaluable in helping us service the team in a professional manner.”

Cimino attended St. Thomas University in Miami, where he earned his undergraduate degree in sports administration and his master’s in management. A native of Dania, Florida, Cimino and his wife, Holly, reside in Davie with their daughter, Christianna, and their son, Christian.
