Day 12 Notebook: Another Crisp Practice As Bucs Game Approaches; Other Notes

Posted Aug 7, 2012

What these players wouldn’t give to line up against a different colored jersey – and that day is drawing closer. In the meantime, today’s practice was crisp and focused. Read more news and notes here.

##This time the weather cooperated for the fans as the team headed outside following the warm-ups. Temperatures were cooler than any other day of camp so far, which was a welcome change for the players, but Head Coach Joe Philbin didn’t slow anything down.

“We took the full pads off today as we didn’t have pants on today but we’re going to put them on tomorrow,” he said. “So the plan was to go in uppers today and full pads tomorrow, and we’re actually going to practice on Thursday a little bit more than you normally would the day before a game. It’s training camp, the first game and I don’t envision players getting 60 reps.”

##Chris Clemons picked off David Garrard’s rollout pass in the right corner of the end zone during early 11-on-11 drills.

##Steve Slaton was displaying good hands during routes on air as the running backs are clearly being asked to contribute in the passing game.

##Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill was picked off by Jimmy Wilson in 7-on-7 drills.

##Clyde Gates was excited after catching a TD pass from Matt Moore in the left corner during 1-on-1s and threw his arms out to the side almost like LeBron James used to do before Miami Heat games.

##Once again running back Daniel Thomas showed a nice burst on a 40-yard run off right guard and almost pulled away from safety Jimmy Wilson on is way into the end zone.

##Meanwhile on the other side of the field, Tannehill threw a perfectly placed pass to Marlon Moore behind three defenders.

##Safety Reshad Jones still has excellent closing speed as he proved in breaking up a Matt Moore pass to Charles Clay in the left flat.

##When it was time for red zone drills, Matt Moore got things started by zipping a pass to rookie wide receiver Jeff Fuller on a slant route. Fuller snatched the ball out of the air with his fingers for the score.

##One of the areas of concern for Philbin so far in training camp has been mishandled snaps and fumbles, and that was an issue again for rookie running back Lamar Miller on an inside handoff drill as he lost the handle.

##Tannehill was tested in the two-minute drill as he completed two tough passes back-to-back to Gates and Julius Pruitt, but then saw Wilson time his break on the ball perfectly to bat away a pass down the seam intended for rookie right end Michael Egnew.

##Wide receiver Roberto Wallace continued his trend of ending drills with impressive catches as he reeled in a tight ball thrown by Tannehill down the right sideline.

##Jonas Gray looked like he was auditioning for the strongest man competition by taking a sledgehammer to a tractor tire as part of his rehabilitation in the bubble.

##Former Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills general manager Bill Polian took in today’s practice before going on Sirius XM satellite radio with Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com. The two broadcast live from noon to 3 p.m.

LATER DAY IN STORE AT WEDNESDAY’S PRACTICE: Things are being flipped a little tomorrow in training camp as the team will go through it’s walk-through in the morning inside the bubble.

Fans planning to attend practice will get to sleep in more and get through their work day as the open portion of practice on the outside practice fields is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Practice times are always subject to change so be sure to check Dolphins.com, Twitter and the Dolphins’ official Facebook page for updates.
