Dolphins Drop In To Palm Springs North Elementary for Gatorade JTC

Posted Oct 9, 2013

The kids participated in six football stations, which emphasize the fundamentals of football, such as throwing, catching and running.

The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Department dropped by Palm Springs North Elementary in Hialeah for their weekly Gatorade Junior Training Camp (JTC) school visit, and nearly 500 students participated in the event.

It was a day full of fun and learning, consisting of six interactive football drills, cheerleader routines and the “Dol-Fit” message.

“I think it’s a great experience for the kids to really have an understanding of the Dolphins organization. A lot of the time, they see players and the organization from afar,” Palm Springs North Principal Jason Allen said. “It’s great for them physically to get out here and experience some of the drills at a lower level. It helps them connect to the community, which we think is fantastic.”

The camp began with Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Director Twan Russell engaging with the students about the importance of education, staying physically fit and making positive choices. He discussed taking a pledge to read five books per month, exercising at least 60 minutes per day and making choices that will benefit their futures.

“I think the student of Palm Springs North really soaked up what I said today,” Russell said. “They were a great group of kids, and we really had a blast out there today. We’d be happy to return in the future.”

After Russell’s message, the kids participated in six football stations, which emphasize the fundamentals of football, such as throwing, catching and running.

“The message that the Dolphins spread today is a way of life. Eating healthy is a life-long thing you commit to,” Allen said. “To be physically active and take caring of yourself is a great message. The kids really benefit from this.”

Palm Springs North Elementary, which serves approximately 1,025 students, stresses a similar message, offering nutritional education and healthy options in the cafeteria.

The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment. The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ vision is to prepare the next generation of leaders in staying physically active through our Junior Training Camps (JTC), Youth Football Clinics and Youth Football Camps.
