“We had another successful event this year,” Twan Russell, Miami Dolphins Director of Youth Programs, said. “Every year, the participation continues to grow. This shows how much girls flag football has evolved as a sport. We really enjoy hosting the ladies at our facility, and look forward to seeing them again next year.”
Since 1997, the Dolphins and Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA) have partnered in these games. Started with just six teams, the Jamboree has grown to unbelievable heights.
“I think that the games were very exciting and the kids had a good time out here,” Rocky Gillis, BCAA County Athletic Director, said. “It adds to the momentum that the teams need going into the season. Overall, the event was very successful.”
The BCAA was one of first conferences in the state of Florida that went full force with girls flag football 15 years ago. With the Jamboree, the girls get ready for the upcoming season, while receiving a great experience in a professional football team’s training facility.
“It’s a great opportunity to have the girls play their first game here where the Dolphins practice. It makes them feel special,” Stranahan High School Head Coach Keidran Willis said. “It’s a great tune-up game, and we’re looking forward to having a productive season.”
Other participants in ths games enjoyed the experience and felt it was a good way for them to get prepared for the season.
“It’s fun because everything is different because you’re in a bubble and not out in the sun,” Shakira Nunez from Flanagan High School said. “You get a lot of experience, and you meet different teams and see how they play.”
The girls flag football regular season begins Monday.
