Dolphins Sign Merling And Murtha; Host Four Free Agents

The Miami Dolphins have signed defensive lineman Phillip Merling and offensive tackle Lydon Murtha to their restricted free agent tenders. In addition, the team hosted free agent visits with linebackers Jonathan Goff (N.Y. Giants), Quentin Groves (Oakland), Gary Guyton (New England) and Bryan Kehl (St. Louis).

The 6-4, 295-pound Merling is entering his fifth season in the NFL, all with the Miami Dolphins. Originally a second-round draft choice (32nd overall) of the Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft, Merling has played in 47 career games with five starts. He has notched 3.5 career sacks, eight passes defensed, one interception and one touchdown.

The 6-7, 315-pound Murtha is entering his third season in the NFL. He has played in nine career games, with four starts. Originally a seventh-round draft choice (228th overall) of the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL Draft, Murtha was signed by the Dolphins off the Detroit practice squad on October 20, 2009.
