Messam played the last two seasons in the Canadian Football League, including the 2011 season with the Edmonton Eskimos, where he became the first Canadian running back since 2000 to rush for more than 1,000 yards while also winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian Award.
The 6-3, 245-pound Messam finished the 2011 season with 195 carries for 1,057 yards and six touchdowns and also had 27 receptions for 248 yards while named a 2011 CFL All-Star for his accomplishments. Originally signed as a free agent by the BC Lions of the CFL on May 14, 2010, he carried the ball 23 times for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns in his only season for the Lions. Messam attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, where during the 2007 season he had 168 carries for 993 yards and 16 touchdowns in seven games.
