Former Dolphins LB Jesse Powell Passes Away

Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Jesse Powell died Thursday at age 65 in a Lubbock, Texas hospital.

Powell was selected by the Dolphins in the ninth round of the 1969 draft and played five seasons (1969-73) in the NFL. He was contributor to Miami's Super Bowl winning teams teams in 1972 and 1973.

The former West Texas A&M football star was born in Matador and grew up in Spur. He played defensive line/linebacker for then-West Texas State from 1966 to 1968. Powell was inducted into the WT Hall of Champions in 1988.

After his playing carer, Powell was a longtime State Farm Insurance agent in Lubbock.
