QB J.P. Losman
(On possibly starting against his former team in the Buffalo Bills this weekend)- “I knew it was always a possibility when I signed here. You look on the schedule and you see we’ve got a chance to play them twice so I knew that was a possibility. As soon as I got here I prepared everyday like I was starting. Since the moment I got here I prepared every day. That’s just what you have to do. Here is the opportunity where it might be the case, who knows, and it would be great to. It’s my first start since I left there in the NFL. To be against them is pretty ironic but that just seems like what it might be.”
(On how much more work he got today than normal)- “I got a couple more reps than I usually do, yes. But I didn’t get majority so who knows. You never know. Nothing surprises me in this league, nothing does. I just go to practice and have no clue what’s going to happen.”
(On learning the system here)- “Well. I’m comfortable with it. Not a problem.”
(On how different it was for him today without Coach Sparano)- “Well getting here everything was new. Learning the offense my mind was just spinning and spinning every day. I was learning so I didn’t have as much time to get to know everybody as much as I’d like. But in the last three, four weeks I have. When you’re a part of a team even though I wasn’t playing the losses hurt and the wins were happy times. And so I had those ups and downs with everybody. So yes I had them with Coach Sparano. In this business I’ve seen a lot. Like I said nothing surprises me at all. It’s unfortunate that this is a part of it. He’s a good man. He’s a good coach. I learned a lot as far as his philosophies, what he taught the team. I know the guys really respect him. That’s what I take away from everything was what was everyone else saying about him because they had been with him the last couple years and nothing but good things.”
(On if he said he didn’t take the majority of the snaps today at practice)- “That’s what I said. It was a trick answer. I’ll let you figure it out (laughing).”
(On
(On if it would be bizarre with him playing in Buffalo with a new coach)- “Yeah this is bizarre. Trust me. It’s been bizarre since I left Buffalo. It was bizarre my last year in Buffalo was foreign to me…not getting reps and someone else being the starter full time. That was odd. It’s been odd for about three years for me now…three and a half. Beginning of the season I was in school. I was throwing with my uncle throwing at the local college. We were just throwing balls four times a week. And here you are with a chance to start here on a Sunday against your former team and some former friends and former fans. Yeah, it’ll be exciting.”
(On what he wants to prove to the city of Buffalo)- “Nothing to prove. I’m old enough now not to get caught up into that. I think younger in my career I tried to prove too much and that’s just like any quarterback. I never left in the offseason. They say take time off I never took time off. I wanted to be there. I wanted to work and it was probably too much but that’s what young quarterbacks do. You get in there and you thrust in there and you want to be the guy so bad. I think what you end up doing is forcing a couple of balls, testing your limits…what’s possible in this league, can I fit that in there when I should just check it down…so you just are learning those things. It just happened I felt that once I was learning to not make that throw that the plug was plugged. That’s just the way it goes.”
(On the reaction he will get in Buffalo)- “I have no clue. The Buffalo newsroom asked me the same question. I said honestly I haven’t even thought about that. I know I have a lot of friends there. I’ve had a gazillion text messages and voicemails of Buffalo people saying they’re going to be there and they’re going to bring out their Losman jerseys. I doubt that will happen but who knows (laughing). It will still be the wrong colors. I have no idea. Either way I’ll probably just laugh it off and let’s get on with the game.”
(On why it was so hard to reestablish himself after Buffalo)- “I could speculate for hours but I have no idea. That’s just the way the business goes. I’ve seen other guys get numerous chances…chance after chance even with different teams or with the same team. Here I am bouncing around going to the UFL because my agent and Coach (Jim) Fassel thought it was the best thing to do. And then bounce around and I go to Oakland, go to Seattle. We all thought these were good ideas. For whatever reason it just didn’t work out, never got back on the field. It will be exciting to get back on the field. I don’t look back and have hard feelings or anything like that. We’re all professionals and that’s just part of it. You just roll.”
(On how much he can take from the action he got in the last game)- “A lot. Yeah my feet were all messed up. I felt like I was seeing the field very well. My reads were fine. But little things like I was backed up and took the sack, the safety. We had (Anthony) Fasano open. I probably should have just dumped it even though my read said to stay over here with (Brian) Hartline I probably should have dumped it off to (Anthony) Fasano. Knowing I’m backed it up, second down…it might have been third, no I think it was second down. Just let’s get out of here. Let’s just dump it down. I probably should have taken that but that’s just part of it. Glad I got that out of the way.”
(On his uncle’s name and the college he was throwing at)- “He’s going to love this. He’s crazy. Uncle Art. His name is Uncle Art. He doesn’t have a last name (laughing). He does but you will call him Uncle Art if you met him. Trust me. That’s what his name is. (It was at) SMC, Santa Monica Community College. He went to Venice. We all went to Venice High School. He started the whole #7 thing…we all the whole family started wearing #7. This is the first time I haven’t worn #7. That’s just part of it. He told me if I ever get back in there he’s like you better mention me (laughing). He’s 5’6. He’s a dark, dark Mexican man. He has excellent hands. He’s a very, very good athlete. He was a high school star until he did the from what I’m told senior year first game he did the funky chicken and the coach kicked him out. He couldn’t play his senior year of football. Ever since then he thought he should have made it to the NFL. That’s the end. That’s Uncle Art.”
