NOTEBOOK: Fields’ Leg A Busy One; Other Notes

Punter makes strong case for the Pro Bowl with his performance.

Punters and kickers tend to come to the forefront in bad weather games like the one that was played today between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills, and Dolphins punter Brandon Fields did just that.

With the wind and the freezing rain basically grounding Miami’s offense to a halt, Fields was called upon 10 times to flip the field and try to help out the defense. He averaged 46.1 yards on those 10 punts and delivered two for more than 60 yards, including a 74-yarder in the third quarter that is the third longest in franchise history.

What was even more impressive was the fact that Fields placed six of his punts inside Buffalo’s 20, another franchise record. He did all of this in extremely windy conditions going both directions and for all intents and purposes should have solidified a deserving spot in the Pro Bowl.

Fields entered the game ranked second in the league in gross punt average at 48.6 yards, third in net average at 42.4 and seventh in punts inside the 20 at 27, with that last ranking destined to rise after today.

Tight end Charles Clay moves into sole possession of second place in franchise history for the most receptions by a tight end in a single season with his four catches today. He now has 65 and trails only Randy McMichael’s 73 in 2004 and his 716 receiving yards are second behind McMichael’s 791 that same year. … Quarterback Ryan Tannehill now has 3,709 passing yards on the season, which is the 10th highest single-season total in franchise history and the most by any quarterback other than Dan Marino. … Wide receiver Mike Wallace’s four catches gives him 68 for the season, the second highest total of his career behind his 71 in 2011 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. … Wide receiver Brian Hartline has recorded a reception in 25 consecutive games and is 22 yards shy of his second straight 1,000-yard season at 978. His 74 receptions on the season are tied for his career-high set last year and his 2,061 receiving yards over the past two seasons are the fourth highest total for a two-year span by a Miami receiver. His 148 receptions over that span are the seventh most. … Cornerback Nolan Carroll’s interception of Bills quarterback Thad Lewis in the second quarter was his third of the season, a career-high, and Miami’s 18th of the season after coming up with only 10 all of last season. … Carroll’s sack of Lewis in the third quarter was his second of the season, which is also a career-high. … The Dolphins are the only team in the NFL to come up with a turnover in each of their 15 games. … Reggie Roby’s 77-yard punt on November 29th, 1987 at Buffalo and Matt Turk’s 77-yarder at Buffalo on November 25th, 2001 are the only longer punts than Fields’ 74-yarder. … Turk’s five punts inside the 20 against Baltimore in 2003 and five against Buffalo in 2002 are now the second most behind Fields.

The Dolphins close out the regular season next Sunday at home against the New York Jets at Sun Life Stadium in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
