New D-Lineman Austin Happy For Fresh Start

Former New York Giant believes Dolphins are a good fit for him.

When Marvin Austin got the phone call yesterday from his agent telling him to hop on a plane to Miami from New Jersey, the 6-foot-2, 312-pound Austin was a bit confused.

“I was like, I already worked out there,” said Austin, who was taken in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft with the 52nd overall pick out of North Carolina. “He told me they (the Dolphins) wanted to bring me down and talk to me and I got down here last night, was here at the facility this morning and the rest is history.”

Austin appeared in eight games with the Giants in 2012 after missing all of his rookie season due to injury and finished with five tackles. He had a big hit on New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez in the preseason this year that sent Sanchez off with a shoulder injury but he couldn’t stick on the 53-man roster.

So the Washington, D.C. native stayed in the New Jersey area and kept working out so he could stay in shape for whenever that other NFL team came calling. His opening came when veteran defensive tackle Vaughn Martin was placed on Injured Reserve today and now Austin gets a second chance.

“I feel like this is a new beginning for myself and I hope to take full advantage. I’m just grateful to be here,” Austin said. “I’m going to be a professional, give it everything I got and let my play do the talking. I plan to bring quickness, strength and make plays for this team. From what I’ve seen on film I think this suits my game a little better and I think it tailors to the quick stuff I was known for.”

Austin chuckled when asked if a week was enough time for him to get up to speed, saying, “Of course. A day or whatever they give me is enough time.”
