After announcing on Wednesday that he was retiring from football, the tributes to
Three songs in following “The Electric Slide” and Travis Tritt’s “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive,” the classic Boyz II Men tune “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” blared over the loudspeakers. Taylor bowed his head and laughed while trying to regain his composure and then gave a symbolic wave with his right arm. But that wasn’t all.
“They threw buckets of ice water on him after practice, which was funny,” interim Head Coach Todd Bowles said. “That was the linebackers behind that so they had a good time with it. Otherwise it was a normal practice. JT’s a humble guy, he’s not going to say too much because he doesn’t want to attract attention to himself so he’s going to treat it all the same.”
Linebackers
“It’ll mess me up talking about it because it’s just a matter of time for all of us,” said Burnett, who joined the Dolphins during training camp. “But in all honesty he’s been like a big brother to me. He’s a little bit older than my big brother though so he’s more like an uncle. Uncle JT.
“Anybody who’s been around the game that long you’ve got to respect, even if you don’t like him, which isn’t the case with JT. I mean 139.5 sacks, that’s sixth all-time and there aren’t too many people in this game that can say they’re on an all-time list in any category.”
Come Sunday, Taylor’s right arm will be very heavy with all of the waving he’s going to be doing.
BELL HONORED BY MEDIA: Veteran strong safety
This afternoon following the team’s practice, Bell was recognized for how accommodating and professional he was all season with the media’s “Good Guy” award. The South Florida media votes it on at the end of the season and each recipient has a unique perspective on what it actually means to him.
“I appreciate it and I’m a leader on this team and as a leader on this team and a veteran player you feel obligated to do (the interviews),” Bell said. “When things are going good it’s easy to talk but you really see how a person is and what comes out when you’re losing and times are hard. So win or lose if you’re a true professional you can talk no matter what the situation is.”
Bell, in his eighth season, admitted there were times every day when he’d rather stay in the lunch room or the training room and not have to answer questions. Miami’s 0-7 start to the season definitely tested his resolve in that area.
“It’s hard because when you’re 0-5 and everybody’s coming at you it’s difficult,” Bell said. “But at the same time being in this league as long as I have it’s a little easier to go out there and talk about it. You don’t want to keep it in. Sometimes it’s good to get that off your shoulders and kind of get everything out than kind of keep everything in.”
The previous winners of the award include Ronnie Brown, Greg Camarillo, Andre Goodman, Vonnie Holliday, Ricky Williams and Jason Taylor.
