On its 2nd Anniversary, the Miami Dolphins Special Teams driven by Chevy program celebrated the phenomenal work of the Volunteers over the past two years which included completing over 100,000 hours of community service since the program’s inception. Several volunteers were recognized for their outstanding volunteer service and volunteers who completed at least 100 hours of community service were honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Award winners for the 2011 volunteer year are:
Volunteer of the Year: Matthew London
Volunteer Captain of the Year: Shelley Beck
Chevy’s Most Driven Volunteer: Kandy Penenori
Volunteer Choice: Adriana Diaz
High School Volunteer of the Year: Juliana Smith
Volunteer Family of the Year: The Downes/Fasking Family
Matthew London, from Miramar, was named Volunteer of the Year.
“Matthew truly embodies the spirit of volunteering,” said Nixon. “He understands that he is here to help further the mission of a nonprofit. So he doesn’t ask for “the better” positions because he knows that volunteering sometimes requires grunt work. He never complains, always signs up for more activities and leaves a job well done wherever he goes.”
Kandy Penenori, from West Palm Beach, was named Chevy’s Most Driven Volunteer.
“There is no doubt that Kandy loves volunteering,” said Nixon. “She volunteers for events not scheduled through the Special Teams program and we commend her for that. She does wait on Special Teams to schedule an event to further the mission of this program and for that she should be commended.”
Shelley Beck, from Plantation, was named Volunteer Captain of the Year.
“Whenever our team sees Shelley Beck’s name on the volunteer list, we can breathe a sigh of relief,” said Nixon. “With so many events it’s impossible for staff to make it to all of them. So we have grown to rely on our dependable volunteer leaders like Shelley to help manage the program in our absence.”
Juliana Smith, from Hialeah/Miami Lakes Senior High School was named the High School Volunteer of the Year.
“Juliana is a born leader,” said Nixon. “She makes community service a popular thing to do, always bringing a group with her to volunteer. We need more teen leaders like her.”
Adriana Diaz, from Mexico, was named Volunteer Choice of the Year.
“Adriana is an inspiration to the staff at the Miami Dolphins,” said Nixon. “She is a diehard fan that jumped at the chance to volunteer with Special Teams even though she lives in Mexico. She sets up monthly volunteer activities for our Special Teams Mexico volunteers. She truly understands the mission of this program and it’s great to see that this program has touched a fan so far away.”
The Volunteer Family of the Year award was given to the Downes/Fasking family from Pembroke Pines. They were given two camp spots to the Dolphins Youth Program football camp.
“This family instills the values of community service in their children which is needed to make sure South Florida is a better place to live for generations to come.” said Nixon.
