Posted Mar 12, 2014

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Randy Starks meets with reporters to discuss his re-signing with the Dolphins.

Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey introduction – “Welcome everybody. Again this is part of a big day. I’m excited to announce the re-signing of Randy Starks. We couldn’t be more happy for him to return to the Miami Dolphins. (He’s) a quality football player, a quality person. I know he’s been very active in the community. He’s, what we always talked about, a good teammate, a good person in the community and an excellent football player. Today shows a lot about our commitment up-front and how important that is. Randy Starks, a two-time Pro Bowler, a versatile defensive lineman that can play the run, that can rush the passer (and) that could do a lot of things. We are very excited that we can bring him back and be part of a formidable front-line to the defense that we are building to complement our offense and special teams. We are just really excited to have him back in the Miami Dolphins family. With that, I introduce you guys to a guy you already know well, Randy Starks.”

Randy Starks:

(On how it feels to lock up the deal to stay with a team he’s had so much success with) - “I mean it feels really good. It could be worse, I could be out on the street, but for the most part I’m glad to be back. I’ve been in this organization for six years and I think I’m established here. I’m just happy to be back.”

(On what point in the past few days returning to the Dolphins become an option for him) - “It’s always been a possibility. I think this is my first choice. That’s why I didn’t take any visits or anything like that. I’m just glad to be back.”

(On if he felt out the market and felt like this is the way it was going to have to be) - “Not really. I had options out there, but like I said this is where I want to be. I want to finish my career here, and I think this two-year deal gives me a chance to do that.”

(On how he thinks the defensive tackle rotation will look with him and Earl Mitchell signing) - “I think it would look the same as if (Paul) Soliai was still here, a three-man rotation, certain packages, certain people are out there. I don’t think my role on the team is going to change, but I’m going to have to go out there and prove myself.”

(On what he said regarding the two-year deal allowing him to finish his career with the Dolphins) - “It gives me a chance to finish my career here, yes.”

(On if he expects to play more than two more years) - “You know you’ve got to see what happens. That’s not my goal just to play two years and be done, but it at least gives me a chance to be here two more years and see if anything happens after that.”

(On what other teams he was talking to) - “I just talked to a lot of different teams.”

(On if the Dolphins were the team he wanted to be with all along) - “Yes.”

(On the free agents the team has already signed and if he’s familiar with any of the players) - “I’m familiar with a couple of these guys. (Earl) Mitchell, I think he’s a good player. He’s going to be a good player for us inside. (Branden) Albert, I think he’s a good offensive lineman. I think the moves we’ve made so far just shows that we are close to doing something special here in trying to bring us some people here to get us over the hump.”

(On what he sees as the potential for the defense coming off of last year) - “Our expectations are really high. Last year we didn’t do as well as we really wanted to. I think this year we can start all over, add some pieces in there and see what happens. We weren’t happy with the way it ended or the way we finished last year. We have a chance to change that this year.”

(On if he knows anything about Earl Mitchell) - “I know he is a solid guy, a young guy. He has a lot of potential.”

(On how he thinks Earl Mitchell will fit into the rotation) - “I think he will fit in fine. I think that’s the reason why we brought him here. Like I said, everybody has to go out there and prove themselves. We’ll see what happens.”

(On if it is bittersweet that he is staying but Paul Soliai is moving on) - “I mean he’s a good player. He’s been here for a long time. He will be well missed, but we have people who can step up.”

(On how good the defense can be this year) - “I think we will be one of the top defenses in the league. If I didn’t think that, I probably wouldn’t come back here. I see a lot of potential. We just have to go out there and prove it.”

(On if he’s kept up with free agency much) - “I mean you see stuff here and there, but for the most part I can’t tell you everything that’s going on.”

(On not having to move) - “That’s the beauty of it.”
