Sun Life Stadium Gets First Look At Qualcomm Beacon Technology

First live testing of digital fan experience is a sign of things to come.

A few hours prior to kickoff today between the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, a group of media got the first look at Qualcomm’s Gimbal contextual awareness platform through it’s partnership with the Dolphins.

Brian Dunphy, Senior Director of Business Development for Qualcomm Retail Solutions, Inc., served as the tour guide and gave an exciting preview of what the select group of season ticket members testing out the technology will experience today.

The tour started in the lobby inside of Gate G and went outside first to the Dan Marino statue, where a message pops up on the mobile device alerting the user to a video of Marino highlights. All of this happens after the user accepts the terms of the services being provided by Qualcomm and eMbience and after a welcome video message is played on the device.

During the tour, Dunphy pointed out the location of the different proximity beacons that look about the size of a smoke alarm and are low cost and low maintenance, with some mounted on light poles near the Grand Plaza and others mounted on the ceiling inside the club level. The group then headed back inside to the Ford Sideline Club where another welcome message was triggered shortly after stepping inside, and then it was upstairs to the club level concession area.

As soon as you stepped off the escalator, an alert linking to a coupon for 10 percent off of ice cream at the Chill stand was activated. As the group moved further inside another “line busting” alert sponsored by Bank United popped up, letting you know that you will find shorter wait times near Section 255.

Finally, the group made it up to Club LIV where an example of the VIP experience was given. As Dunphy walked inside the club close to a video screen behind the bar, a personalized welcome message with his name appeared and to go a step further, a list of the patron’s favorite cocktail shows up to really make that person feel special.

One last example of the capabilities came at 10:45, when a Ford giveaway alert appeared letting the user know that he or she could win Ford Sideline Club tickets if they head to the Ford Sideline Club. This is the first live test of the technology at an NFL football game and Dunphy and the other principals involved are eager to get the feedback from those season ticket members.
