PRESS RELEASE: Dolphins To Conduct Two-Day Youth Football Camp In Cayman Islands

Posted Jun 28, 2013

Two-day summer camp is open to boys and girls, ages 6-14.

The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Department will travel to the Cayman Islands to conduct their first youth football camp in the top Caribbean destination this July 24 and 25. The two-day summer camp is open to boys and girls, ages 6-14, and will be held in George Town, Grand Cayman. The camp will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day at Timothy McField Football Field, commonly known as The Annex.

"We're excited for the chance to return to the Cayman Islands and to continue to make an impact on the children," Twan Russell, Director of Youth Programs said. "This is an excellent opportunity to spread our message internationally about the sport of American football and the importance of physical fitness and teamwork."

The initiative is part of an innovative partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism that began in 2012 with the goal of spreading awareness of the islands as a travel destination, while also increasing knowledge of football and physical fitness amongst the Caymanian youth.

Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Director Twan Russell will lead the camp, while the following former Dolphins players will help coach the participants:

• Troy Drayton
• Sam Madison
• James Brown
• Lorenzo Hampton
• Ed Perry
• Derrick Rodgers
• Oronde Gadsden

“We are looking forward to this exciting summer camp and working with the Dolphins franchise to welcome their loyal fans to our shores as well as educate our children about the sport,” commented Director of Tourism Shomari Scott. “Partnerships such as this help to build destination awareness amongst the diverse Dolphins’ fan base and we anticipate that any family who participates will also become a fan of the Cayman Islands.”

This will be the Dolphins second official visit to the Cayman Islands. In May, representatives conducted a three-day tour which impacted more than 1,400 children from 15 different schools through a series of pep rallies that stressed the importance of physical education.

The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism has created travel packages for families that would like to be a part of this unique experience. Packages include airfare, hotel accommodations, breakfast, camp fees, ground transportation and excursions to the famous Stingray City or Cayman Turtle Farm.
