PRESS RELEASE: Miami Dolphins Host Inaugural Community Service Academy

Posted Jun 21, 2013

Dolphins to host more than 80 local high school students throughout South Florida for the Inaugural Community Service Academy.

The Miami Dolphins will host more than 80 local high school students throughout South Florida for the Inaugural Community Service Academy from June 24-28, 2013. The Community Service Academy was created to give high schools students the opportunity to achieve service hours to help bolster their college applications while making an impact in the community under a structured volunteer program.

“This program was initiated because we felt that there was a lack of opportunities for high school students during the summer to get engaged and do something meaningful in the community,” said Leslie Nixon Manager of Volunteer Programs for the Miami Dolphins. “The initial response to the Community Service Academy was so overwhelming that we had to double the capacity for this week. We will be adding additional weeks throughout the summer to meet the needs of these students.”

The students will rotate daily at different service projects at the Flamingo Gardens, Chapman Partnerships, O Oleta River State Park, His House, Alexander Nininger State Veterans Nursing Home, Zoo Miami and Feeding South Florida. After each event, the most impactful volunteer will receive a “game ball” as recognition of his or her exceptional work.
