Pregame Breakdown
Offense | Defense
The Dolphins were grounded for the first time in the second half of last week’s tough loss to New Orleans as the Saints held them to just 17 yards on the ground after they exploded for 120 in the first half. Ronnie Brown is still in the top 10 among all NFL running backs with 491 rushing yards and a 4.5 yards-per-carry average and ranks second behind Adrian Peterson and Maurice Jones-Drew in rushing touchdowns with seven, while Ricky Williams had the longest touchdown run of his career against the Saints (68 yards) and tied a career-high for touchdowns in a single game with three. Miami ranks second in the NFL behind the Jets with an average of 170.3 rushing yards per game and will try to exploit the middle of New York’s defense without nose tackle Kris Jenkins.
After back-to-back games of more than 300 rushing yards the Jets are now the top-ranked rushing offense in the entire the NFL, averaging 184.9 yards per game. They dethroned the Dolphins, who dropped to No. 2, despite losing Leon Washington for the season to a broken right fibula that required emergency surgery. Rookie Shonn Greene gashed the Raiders for 144 yards and two touchdowns as a compliment to Thomas Jones, who is fourth in the league in rushing with 602 yards, while Miami owns the No. 4 run defense.
Chad Henne’s breakout performance in the Monday night win over the Jets, when he completed 20-of-26 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns for a 130.4 passer rating, propelled Miami to a No. 26 ranking overall and the Dolphins stayed there after last week’s loss to the Saints. Henne did have two interceptions returned for touchdowns but the first one was not his fault and he has taken clear ownership of this offense. More consistent production out of his receivers will help the second-year QB in what will be his fourth start and first on the road against another tough secondary.
Rookie QB Mark Sanchez bounced back from three straight losses and the worst outing of his young career in an overtime loss to Buffalo by completing 9-of-15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown and rushing for another touchdown in a 38-0 win at Oakland. He is growing more comfortable with recent acquisition Braylon Edwards but New York's passing offense is ranked an abysmal 29th, averaging just 152.1 yards per game, while the Dolphins' pass defense is ranked 19th.
Ted Ginn, Jr. took over the kick return duties after Patrick Cobbs suffered a season-ending knee injury and is averaging 23.8 yards per return with a long of 34, while Davone Bess continues to handle punt returns at an average of 9.4 per return. The blocking has improved in the return game and kicker Dan Carpenter is 9-of-10 on field goals with a long of 45 and a perfect 17-of-17 on extra points.
This is the area where the loss of Washington hurts the Jets the most as Jim Leonhard or Jerricho Cotchery will have to take on the kick returning duties. Leonhard already returns punts and is averaging just 8 yards a return while Washington was averaging 24.8 yards on kickoff returns and Miami's coverage units have dramatically improved. Kicker Jay Feely has made 11 of his 13 field goal attempts with a long of 43 and has hit on all 17 of his extra points.
Offensive coordinator Dan Henning won the chess match last time with Rex Ryan, catching him off guard with a 21-yard pass from Ronnie Brown to Ricky Williams out of the "Wildcat" and putting Henne in the safest situations while at the same time trusting him to go downfield. His game plan against the Saints was working well in the first half but things unraveled in the second half. He will have the Dolphins ready again this Sunday and make the necessary adjustments.
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will have to get creative as he figures out a solution to replacing Washington's productivity in the offense since Washington was an even more dangerous receiver out of the backfield than he was a runner. The son of legendary head coach Marty Schottenheimer is in his fourth season as the Jets' offensive coordinator and was retained by rookie head coach Rex Ryan when he took over after engineering one of the best offensive seasons in franchise history last year. Jones reached the Pro Bowl after rushing for 1,312 yards and a team-record 13 rushing touchdowns under Schottenheimer.
