Carter was a Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship participant with San Francisco in 2016. He began his coaching career in 2015 as a graduate student assistant at his alma mater, California.

Prior to coaching, Carter played 13 seasons in the NFL as a defensive end, totaling 184 games played with 147 starts for San Francisco (2001-05), Washington (2006-10), New England (2011, 2013) and Oakland (2012). He recorded career totals of 517 tackles (388 solo), 80.5 sacks, 18 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

In 2011, Carter earned All-AFC honors and was selected to the Pro Bowl after he recorded 10 sacks and two forced fumbles. His most productive season came in 2002 when he totaled 54 tackles (45 solo) and a career-high 12.5 sacks for San Francisco. Carter was a first-round pick (seventh overall) by San Francisco in the 2001 NFL draft.

Carter had an illustrious collegiate career at California where he was a unanimous All-American selection as a senior in 2000. He was named first-team All-Pac-10 twice (1999-2000) and won the Morris Trophy in 2000, awarded to the Pac-10’s top defensive lineman.

Carter earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies. His father, Rubin Carter, played at the University of Miami and had a 12-year NFL career as a defensive lineman with Denver (1975-86).

He and his wife, Bethany, have two children, Aysha and Quincy.
