Rusty McKinney is in his second season with the Miami Dolphins after he was named defensive quality control on Jan. 25, 2016.

During McKinney’s first season in Miami, he helped the Dolphins have their most successful season in eight years, winning 10 games and earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2008. The team won nine of its final 11 games and during that span, forced 21 turnovers, tied for the fourth-most in the NFL. Miami’s defense was very opportunistic, finishing fourth in the NFL in third-down conversion percentage, allowing opponents to convert just 36.2 percent of third downs. The team also had a seven-game streak with at least one turnover, it’s longest such streak since 2013. The 19 turnovers they forced in those seven games were the most in a seven-game span by the team since 2004. Defensive end Cameron Wake and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh both earned Pro Bowl selections.

Prior to Miami, McKinney spent two seasons (2014-15) as a coaching intern for the Cleveland Browns. He also spent five years on the staff at Bentley University (2009-13), including the 2013 season as the defensive coordinator.

At Bentley, McKinney had several responsibilities, including linebackers coach, strength and conditioning coordinator and special teams coordinator.

McKinney’s first coaching job was at Saint Anselm College in 2008 where he was the team’s outside linebackers coach.

McKinney was a four-year letterwinner at Towson where he was named a team captain and team MVP as a senior. He garnered second-team All-Patriot League honors in both 2000 and 2001 and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the school in 2002. McKinney also earned an associate’s degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales in 2004.
