Game Recap: Ground Game Leads Dolphins to 15-10 Win Over New England Patriots

Led by the running back duo of rookie Jaylen Wright and Raheem Mostert, the Miami Dolphins rushed for 193 yards in their 15-10 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.

Wright had his most productive day as a pro, rushing for a career-high 86 yards on 13 carries (6.6 avg.). Running back Raheem Mostert also played a pivotal role in pacing Miami's rushing attack, tallying 19 carries for 80 yards (4.2 avg.) in his first appearance since Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Dolphins' front seven wreaked havoc on the Patriots' offensive line with a total of nine quarterback hits. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler led the charge, totaling three quarterback hits and a sack, while defensive tackle Calais Campbell recorded two quarterback hits. Linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah also made plays in New England's backfield, posting four tackles and a sack.

Quarterback Tyler Huntley, making his second start with the Dolphins, completed 18 of 31 passes for 194 yards and an interception. He also ran for seven yards on three carries.

Huntley led Miami to points on the opening possession of the game. An 18-yard pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill and a pair of completions to tight end Jonnu Smith were key to the eight play, 38-yard drive that led to a 54-yard field goal by kicker Jason Sanders – his third field goal of 50-plus yards this season.

Sacks by Ogbah and Sieler forced a Patriots three-and-out, but an interception by cornerback Christian Gonzalez on a Huntley pass intended for Hill set New England up in Miami territory. Four plays later, running back Rhamondre Stevenson followed his blockers for a 33-yard touchdown run that gave the Patriots a 7-3 lead with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter.

Miami's next possession resulted in a 41-yard missed field goal, but the Dolphins defense forced a three-and-out, making New England punt with 12:54 remaining in the second quarter.

After a blocked punt, New England took over at the Miami 23-yard line. Miami's defense held strong and forced Patriots kicker Joey Slye to attempt a 33-yard field goal, which he missed wide right.

With less than a minute in the half, wide receiver Braxton Berrios returned a punt 12 yards to the New England 44-yard line. A 16-yard completion to Smith put the Dolphins just outside of the red zone with a chance to put points on the board, but a fumbled snap on a 51-yard field goal attempt left Miami trailing 7-3 at halftime.

Both teams traded field goals on their opening drives of the second half. Miami's eight play scoring drive contained a pair of Patriots penalties and a 12-yard run by rookie running back Jaylen Wright, which was capped by a 32-yard Sanders field goal.

Following another New England three-and-out, the Dolphins continued chipping away at the Patriots' lead, as Sanders knocked through a 47-yard field goal to bring Miami to within one point with 30 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The Dolphins retook the lead late in the fourth quarter as their ground game paved the way for a 15 play, 80-yard touchdown drive that took up 7:36 of game time. Fullback Alec Ingold had what would become the game-sealing score on a three-yard run up the middle.

New England had two more opportunities to answer but came up short in Dolphins territory on both instances, one resulting in a fourth-down stop and the other as time expired.

Hill led all players with 69 receiving yards on six receptions. Smith totaled a season-high 62 yards on five catches, and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle caught four passes for 46 yards.

Safety Marcus Maye posted a season-high nine tackles and a pass deflection, while linebacker Jordyn Brooks totaled seven tackles and cornerback Jalen Ramsey added five tackles and two passes defensed.

The Dolphins now head into their bye week and return to action in Week 7 in a road matchup with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, October 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on FOX.
