Kyle Johnston currently serves as the vice president of sports medicine and performance/head athletic trainer for the Miami Dolphins. The 2026 season marks his 10th year in the NFL and ninth with the club.
In his current role, Johnston oversees athletic training, player performance, nutrition and strength and conditioning. He first joined the organization in 2018 and served eight seasons as head athletic trainer. Prior to his time with the Dolphins, Johnston spent eight seasons (2010-17) at the University of Louisville as director of sports medicine and five seasons (2005-10) at the University of Florida as assistant athletic trainer. Johnston spent the 2004 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an athletic training intern, after working as a summer intern with Tampa Bay in 2003 and Miami in 2002.
Johnston currently serves as president of the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS) Executive Committee. In 2024, he earned the PFATS President's Award as a member of the Combine Committee. Under Johnston's leadership, the Miami Dolphins were named the 2021 PFATS NFL Athletic Training Staff of the Year. He previously served on the NFL/NFLPA General Medical Committee and the COVID-19 Task Force.
An Elizabethtown, Kentucky native, Johnston is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he received a bachelor's degree in exercise science. He earned his master's degree in human physiology and kinesiology from the University of Florida. Johnston and his wife, Jen, have three daughters, Ella, Reese and Adley.
