Inside the Numbers: Dolphins put up numbers in close game with Panthers

Despite big days from offensive playmakers and two turnovers by the defense, the Dolphins came up short in Carolina and Miami fell to 1-4 on the season.

We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to look at the most notable individual metrics, milestones and more from the Dolphins 27-24 loss in Carolina.

Tagovailoa tosses three

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes in the Week 5 loss. It was the 12th game of his career with three or more passing touchdowns. It was also his fourth-consecutive game with multiple touchdown passes, which is tied with Matthew Stafford for the longest active streak in the NFL.

Tagovailoa has thrown a touchdown pass in 20 consecutive games, the second longest active streak in the NFL behind Lamar Jackson's 28.

Waddling to 100

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle caught six passes for 110 yards in the game. He also caught a go-ahead 46-yard touchdown with less than five minutes to play. It was his longest touchdown reception since his 60-yard score against the Jets in Week 15 of the 2023 season. It was Waddle's fifth touchdown of 40-plus yards in his career.

The performance marked Waddle's 13th-career 100-yard receiving game, breaking a tie with Nat Moore for fifth-most in franchise history.

Waller scores again

Tight end Darren Waller scored his third touchdown of the season on a four-yard pass from Tagovailoa in the second quarter Sunday. His three receiving touchdowns are the most by a Dolphin in their first two games with the organization.

Two More Takeaways

Miami's encore performance to the three-takeaway showing on Monday Night Football started with a bang as the Dolphins turned over the Panthers on their first two possessions.

Outside linebacker Bradley Chubb forced the 14th fumble of his career and secured his fourth recovery. It was his 12th-career strip-sack. He has a team-leading four sacks this season.

Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted his first pass since returning to the Dolphins and the 21st of his career.

The Dolphins scored 14 points off turnover against Carolina, the second-consecutive game having 14 points off turnovers. It was the Dolphins first time recording back-to-back games with 14-plus points off turnovers since Weeks 16 and 17 of the 2001 season.

Milestones and achievements

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks racked up 13 more tackles in the game giving him a league-leading 57 total tackles for the season. The performance gave Brooks 712 career tackles, the fourth-most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2020.

Running back De'Von Achane caught another touchdown pass on Sunday. He has three receiving touchdowns on the season and 12 in his career. He joins Chuck Foreman as the only players since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to have 15 rushing touchdowns and 12 receiving touchdowns in their first 33 career games.

Cornerback Rasul Douglas appeared in his 125th game and wide receiver Tahj Washington made his NFL debut.
