Inside the Numbers: Achane shines, Waller finds the end zone again and another takeaway for the defense

The Dolphins and Chargers played a thriller Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, but it was the visitor that took home the victory. Miami erased a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter before the Chargers produced a game-winning field goal drive in the final 45 seconds, dropping the Dolphins to 1-5 on the season.

We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to look at the most notable individual metrics, milestones and more from the Dolphins 29-27 loss to the Chargers.

Achane finds the end zone again

Running back De'Von Achane scored two more touchdowns Sunday. He now has six on the season, tied for second in the NFL. Achane surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards (2,097) becoming the fifth Dolphins player to reach that mark in his first three NFL seasons, joining Lamar Miller, Karim Abdul-Jabbar, Andra Franklin and Ronnie Brown. He also produced his ninth run of 40-plus yards since he entered the league in 2023, tied with Baltimore's Derrick Henry for the most over that span.

Achane is one of ten players since the 1970 AFL-NFL Merger to record three consecutive seasons with at least three rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.

Tua connects with Waller for the third game in a row

Tight end Darren Waller recorded his fourth touchdown in three games Sunday. He's the first Dolphins player to have a touchdown catch in each of his first three games with the team.

It marked quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's 21st-consecutive game with a touchdown pass. That mark matches Tagovailoa's career-best streak and is the second-longest streak in franchise history.

Waddle nearly surpasses the century mark again

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle caught six passes for 95 yards in Sunday's loss. He's played three games since 2022 without Tyreek Hill. In those games, he has recorded 20 receptions for 335 yards and two touchdowns and has produced plays of 60, 46, and 45 yards.

Waddle caught a 45-yard pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Sunday against the Chargers. Following last week's 46-yard touchdown reception, Waddle recorded receptions of at least 45 yards in back-to-back games for the first time since Weeks 15 and 16 of the 2023 season.

Another takeaway

Cornerback Rasul Douglas punched the football free from Chargers tight end Oronde Gadsden II, which was recovered by linebacker Jordyn Brooks. It was the fourth forced fumble in Douglas' career and first with the Dolphins. He also produced seven tackles and a quarterback hit in the game.

The recovery was the sixth of Brooks's career and third since joining Miami in 2024.He totaled nine tackles in the game adding to his league-leading 66 combined tackles this season.

After not producing a takeaway in the first three weeks of the season, the Dolphins have now forced six turnovers since Week 4: four defensive fumble recoveries and one on special team, and an interception. The Dolphins' four defensive fumble recoveries from Weeks 4-6 are tied for most in the league in that span.

Milestones and Achievements

Defensive tackle Kenneth Grant tallied the first full sack of his career when brought down Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the first drive of the game.

Linebacker K.J. Britt made his first start as a Dolphin and produced a game-high 13 tackles, while also setting a career-high in combined tackles.

Punter Jake Bailey punted twice for 111 yards. His 47.0 net punt average ranks second in the NFL this season.

Cornerback Isaiah Johnson made his NFL debut in the game.
