Training Camp Preview 2025: Defensive Line

A brand-new season of Dolphins football is around the corner and we're getting you ready for the start of training camp!

Over the next week we'll be looking at the entirety of the Dolphins 91-man roster and providing a cheat sheet for when the action begins at the Baptist Health Training Complex.

Defensive Line

Defensive Line Coach Austin Clark is one of the best in the business, and he'll get a chance to prove his chops once more with three draft picks and another undrafted rookie added to his room this offseason. The mainstay for Clark, however, is the return of one player off a premier two-season stretch. Zach Sieler is the only defensive tackle in football with double digit sacks each of the last two years. Sieler is the type of player coaches want to clone and arrive on gameday with 22 versions of the same guy – he never leaves the field, he plays every position on the defensive line, and he can win with power, quickness and a polished arsenal of moves. Sieler missed the first two games of his career last season due to a broken orbital bone he suffered in practice. You read that right. He missed just two games with a broken eye bone.

Sieler ranked among the top 10 cumulatively over the last two seasons in quarterback hits, pressures, sacks, pass rush win rate and run stops among defensive tackles.

A 2024 team captain and the Dan Marino Team Most Valuable Player last year, Sieler provides mentorship and leadership that will be more valuable than ever with a collection of youngsters joining him. First-round pick Kenneth Grant, even at age 21, doesn't look like a rookie. One of the most dominant players in college football last year, Grant was a disruptive force both as a 0-technique (the nose tackle head up over the center) and playing the 2-, 2i-, and 3-technique positions (playing over the offensive guard).

Grant's ability to fold the pocket from the nose tackle position makes him a potential three-down force. He scored most of his wins as a 3-technique at Michigan, but he trailed only T'Vondre Sweat (Texas, drafted by the Titans) and Jalen Carter (Georgia, drafted by the Eagles) in terms of QB pressures from the nose tackle position in college football the last three seasons.

Grant will have a second veteran to pepper with questions as Benito Jones is back for his second year in his second stint with the Dolphins. Jones, like many defensive tackles that join Clark's room, enjoyed his best season as a pro, playing primarily on the nose for Miami. He had a career-best 21 QB pressures and 13 run stops in 2024.

The Cast (in numerical order):

  • 90 Kenneth Grant
  • 91 Matthew Butler
  • 92 Zach Sieler
  • 93 Zeek Biggers
  • 94 Jordan Phillips
  • 95 Benito Jones
  • 96 Alex Huntley
  • 97 Ben Stille
  • 98 Matthew Dickerson

Clark and the rest of the Dolphins staff will have some tough choices to make with the game-day rotation. Fifth-round pick Jordan Phillips was projected on the consensus big board as a potential top-120 pick. He can eat up double teams by dropping the anchor and flashes quick pass rush wins from various positions. His college production did not match that tape, but the Dolphins are hoping to be the beneficiary of that by finding a hidden gem.

"We were excited watching (Phillips) and I know Coach (Anthony) Weaver was the first one who came to us," General Manager Chris Grier said of Phillips. "He's 20 years old, has an unbelievable love for football, so we do think there's some things we can unlock with him."

Miami wasn't done. They went back to the interior defensive line in the seventh round with Zeek Biggers out of Georgia Tech. Biggers measured in the 95th percentile for his size and in the 93rd percentile for his vertical jump at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Alex Huntley, undrafted out of Michigan, will push for playing time after an impressive spring camp.

Matthew Butler was claimed off waivers in the spring and had a productive spring camp. He's been an impactful rotational player during his three years with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Like Jones, Ben Stille is back after a detour landed him with the Cardinals for three seasons. Stille had an impressive training camp as a rookie but couldn't quite crack the Dolphins roster in 2022. The Cardinals picked him up on cut-down day, but Stille is back where it all began for the 2025 season. Matthew Dickerson rounds out the room – he played 15 snaps for Miami down the stretch last season.

The Dolphins will be back on the field next week, and you can be in the stands at the Baptist Health Training Complex starting Saturday, July 26. Parking and admission are free, but tickets must be reserved. Learn more here.
