The Dolphins beefed up their offensive line Tuesday when they signed former New York starting center Wesley Johnson.

Johnson started 24 games for the Jets after they claimed him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers midway through the 2014 season. Johnson entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Steelers in the 2014 draft out of Vanderbilt.

This year, Johnson spent the offseason and training camp with the Detroit Lions, who released him when they got down to the 53-player limit.

Johnson's signing came along with the Dolphins placing starting center Daniel Kilgore on injured reserve because of an arm injury he sustained in the game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. Kilgore started the first four games for the Dolphins after coming over in the offseason in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers.

Travis Swanson, a former starter with the Lions, replaced Kilgore in the game against New England.

Malveaux moves up: The Dolphins signed Cameron Malveaux off the practice squad, as he became their second defensive end in two weeks to be promoted that way. He followed Jonathan Woodard, who was promoted from the practice squad last week and made his NFL debut against the Patriots. Malveaux, who joined the Dolphins in 2017 as an undrafted rookie out of the University of Houston, appeared in four games last season after being signed off the practice squad.

Phillips gone: The signing of Malveaux coincided with the decision to waive four-year veteran Jordan Phillips. The 2015 second-round pick appeared in 48 games with 26 starts for the Dolphins, though he did not have any starts this season. Phillips played 27 snaps, the fewest among the defensive tackles, in the loss at New England on Sunday.

Hayes looks ahead: In his first public comments since sustaining a season-ending knee injury, veteran defensive end William Hayes told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network he was planning on coming back in 2018 for a 12th season. Hayes, who was injured in the 28-20 victory against the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 23, signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins this offseason after first joining the team in the spring of 2016 via a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

Practice squad moves: Agent David Canter tweeted Tuesday that defensive tackle Garrison Smith, one of his clients, had been signed to the Dolphins practice squad. It would mark a second stint with the Dolphins for Smith, who joined the team as a rookie free agent in 2014 before being waived in late August. Smith has had stints with the Saints, 49ers, Seahawks, Falcons and Cardinals since then, and has appeared in 11 career regular season games. … Wide receiver Tanner McEvoy, who was on the Dolphins roster for the first three games of the 2018 season, has joined the New Orleans Saints practice squad.

Out and about: Cornerback Xavien Howard and wide receiver Leonte Carroo joined T.D. and members of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders squad when they visited patients at Alex's Place at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center on Tuesday. … Wide receivers Albert Wilson and Kenny Stills visited the 4KIDS of South Florida organization to learn about the group and sign items for an upcoming benefit auction.
